Eratosthenes 2010-2011

Claremont, California USA

Friday 26 March 2010

We are students in an 8th grade Geometry class at El Roble Intermediate School in Claremont, California, United States of America.
The latitude is 34, the longitude is -117.
Out school has approximately 1200 students in 2 grades.
Our town is a college town, about 30 miles east of Los Angeles.
We have a population of about 35,000.
We hope to gain an understanding and appreciation of the practical use of Geometry.
We also hope to grow in our understanding of others’ lives as we read their introductions and results.

This being our first time, we didn’t really know exactly how to proceed, so I had my students measuring between 11:55 and 12:15.
Later, I realized our solar noon is 12:59! So we graphed our results to get an estimate of a shadow of 9cm at 12:59.
